Mexico-based mobile operator America Movil has acquired Nicaraguan telecoms operator Estesa Holding for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition will expand its presence in Central America, where it already has over 11 million customers in Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras.

America Movil was the first operator to offer Full Story">Apple iPhone 3G in Full Story">Latin America when it launched the handset in Mexico last month. It plans to introduce it in 10 more countries in the region this month, when its biggest rival in the region, Spain’s Telefonica, is also preparing an iPhone launch.
