The year 2008 brought a lot of happy moments, new ideas and challenges at the same time. Just recently we concluded the major works of our new pontoon based sailing school building – as you can see in real Nica-style.

I’ve enjoyed many European holiday traditions such as Santa Lucia Day in Scandinavia and St. Nicholas Day in the Netherlands and Belgium. But one of the most memorable wasn’t European at all.

La Purisima is a uniquely Nicaraguan festival held on Dec. 7, celebrating the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The holiday — Nicaragua’s biggest of the year — is a mixture of Halloween, Christmas, and even a little bit of the Fourth of July. It’s a time when it’s great to give and it’s great to receive.

Similar to trick-or-treating in the United States, children go from house to house, asking, “What is the cause of so much joy?” The homeowner says, “The conception of Mary,” and gives out presents or sweets. “Hooray for the Virgin,” is the delighted response from the kids.

San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua (PRWEB) November 21, 2008 –
Ocho Senderos is the newest neighborhood within Costa Dulce; the area is comprised of 21 homesites on 7 acres of tropical wooded terrain just north of Playa Escameca. Ocho Senderos is Spanish for Eight Trails, from the 7 roads that make up the community plus the walking trail that offers direct beach access to Playa Escameca. The neighborhood offers homesites only steps away from the beach in an intimate oceanside setting, while Costa Dulce’s first phase neighborhood, Los Altos, is characterized by its openness, height, and sweeping views of the Pacific.

Tyson J. Harris the on-site managing partner of the development says of the new release: “While Los Altos will always capture the expansive beauty of Costa Dulce, Ocho Senderos offers owners an intimate, serene, tropical setting that is difficult to find anywhere in the world, much more in Nicaragua.”

18 of the 21 homesites remain on the market. Prices of the homesites range from $69,000 to $249,000. Please contact a local real estate agent or Costa Dulce for more information.

In what can only be described as a political war, the capital city of Managua will today become a battleground for rival supporters.

A caravan of about 40 buses filled with FSLN supporters, armed with home made mortars and various other weapons, made it’s way from the northern part of the country toward the capital this morning.

At the same time a similar amount of PLC supporters converged on the capital for their announced peaceful protest march over the recent municipal election results.

The Sandinistas will be trying to block the route of the march with buses and have many supporters at every roundabout in the Capital.

The same tactics were used Sunday in Leon where a protest march there, was unable to proceed and a pitch battle ensued with several casualties.

In Leon the police were either unable or refused to get involved in the situation and chaos prevailed.

Former US baseball star Cal Ripkin JR was forced to cancel his baseball clinic in Leon and the once in a lifetime opportunity for Nicaragua’s baseball youth was lost.

With no government intervention other than the police to allow the peaceful march, Nicaragua is faced with another sad day in its history of political unrest.

Tourist are advised to avoid the capital at all cost today.
