Akron Physician Performs Life Changing Surgery for Nicaraguan Breast Cancer Survivor

Posted on 24 September 2008 by admin

Four years ago, Sandra Castillo DelCarmen, a Nicaraguan native, underwent a mastectomy procedure after being diagnosed with breast cancer. After her surgery, she attended a seminar on third world breast reconstruction to understand her options. That’s where she was introduced to Dr. Douglas Wagner, a physician from Akron Plastic Surgeons, who ended up changing her life.

After hearing Castillo DelCarmen’s story of hope and triumph, Wagner agreed to do her breast reconstruction in Managua in conjunction with her general surgeon. “I see women everyday who come into my office feeling defeated by breast cancer. I didn’t want Sandra to experience those feelings. I wanted to help,” said Wagner.

While in Nicaragua, Dr. Wagner performed Castillo DelCarmen’s breast reconstruction surgery. She was the first patient in the country to receive a procedure known as “TRAM flap” breast reconstruction. The procedure uses abdominal tissues instead of implants to restructure a woman’s breasts.

“There are places around the world that don’t have access to the medical technology required to perform the procedures that we do here in the U.S. I wanted Sandra to have the chance to receive an operation that she would otherwise go without,” said Wagner.

After corresponding over the year, Wagner was unable to return to Nicaragua to complete the second half of the surgery. Knowing what the operation meant to her, Wagner arranged for Castillo DelCarmen’s travel to the U.S. and covered all hotel and medical expenses.

“The surgery and Dr. Wagner’s kindness is something I will never forget. What he did for me during my time of need meant so much to me. I truly feel blessed,” said Castillo DelCarmen. “I was never expecting someone to do so much. His kindness is remarkable. I’m truly grateful to know him.”

While in the U.S., Wagner connected Castillo DelCarmen with the Dragon Dream Team, a group of breast cancer survivors that participate in the sport of Dragon Boat Racing. “I wanted her to know that she’s not alone. These women are a support system for one another, something I felt she needed to experience,” said Wagner.

“I loved the ladies!” said Castillo DelCarmen. “We went out on the dragon boat and paddled around the lake together. I really admire that they get together to focus on something other than the cancer. It really gets your mind off everything. I hope one day I can do something like this, and bring Dragon Boat Racing to the women in Nicaragua.”

According to Wagner, the experience of meeting and treating Castillo DelCarmen is one that he will never forget. “It makes you want to help the other millions of women around the world who are not receiving adequate care. It truly is a one-person-at-a-time movement, and I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

Maximum Mission on Ometepe Island, Nicaragua

Posted on 19 September 2008 by admin

By Shelley Webb,

A JESUS Film ministry team from Yakima, Washington, arrived to Managua, Nicaragua, on August 22. The team ministered on the Island of Ometepe, located in Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America and the largest freshwater island in the world.

The team worked alongside the members of the mother church, the Los Angeles, Nicaragua, Church of the Nazarene, to assist in church planting activities. The multicultural team painted the auditorium and the front wall of the local high school as well as stairs in a community park.

The JESUS Film was shown in the evenings and 39 people accepted Christ. The Los Angeles church is already following up with the new believers to disciple and encourage them.

The team also brought a new set of JESUS Film equipment, but unfortunately the sound system did not arrive with the luggage. Prayer is requested that it will be located by the airline and sent to Managua soon.
